Skincare is one of the only products people apply, daily, to their largest organ — on the strength of an ingredient list they cannot verify. Percentage of active, purity, preservation, source: all invisible, all separated by large cost gaps, all attested by nothing but a label. That is a textbook target for adulteration, and it carries a risk most categories do not — direct harm to skin and health.
A shopper buys a "10% vitamin C serum" or a "retinol night cream" from a marketplace listing that looks official. The bottle is right, the box is right, the QR code scans to a convincing verification page. What is inside might be a fraction of the labelled active — or something far worse. And unlike a fake handbag, a fake serum can burn, scar, or poison the person who trusted it.
A Category Sold on What You Can’t See
Perfumery and cosmetics are consistently among the most frequently seized counterfeit categories in world customs data, according to the OECD/EUIPO Mapping Global Trade in Fakes studies — and skincare is a prime target because its value lives entirely in claims the buyer cannot check. A genuine stabilised active can cost many times more than an inert look-alike, and no consumer can tell 10% ascorbic acid from 1% by look, feel, or smell.

Skincare adulteration is rarely a crude fake. It is a set of substitutions and shortcuts tuned to pass a visual check and a sniff test while failing the only tests that matter.
Dangerous Adulterants
The most alarming fakes contain undeclared, banned actives: mercury in "brightening" creams, undisclosed corticosteroids, hydroquinone above legal limits, or industrial dyes. The FDA has prohibited mercury in cosmetics above 1 part per million since 1973, yet FDA and state health department testing has repeatedly found skin-lightening creams from informal and online channels containing mercury at thousands of times that limit — a product that damages kidneys and nerves while wearing your brand’s name.
Under-Dosed, Phantom Actives
Even "clean" fakes cheat on potency: a labelled 10% or 20% active present at a fraction of the claim, or oxidised and inert by the time it is sold. The formulation looks and applies correctly; the efficacy — and the premium you charge for it — is fiction.
Expired & Diverted, Relabelled
Genuine product that expired or broke its storage conditions is recovered, re-dated, and pushed back through grey channels. Actives degrade, preservatives fail, and a contaminated cream re-enters the market looking pristine — with a cloned batch code that clears every check short of a lab.
