Beyond the dealer’s controlled channel, authentication mostly stops — and fakes know it.
An independent workshop orders a "genuine OEM" filter, clutch, or timing kit through a distributor or a B2B portal. The packaging is a perfect clone, the part number is right, the price is plausible. It is counterfeit — and it passes because nothing in the aftermarket proves the part beyond the number printed on it. The dealership channel may be tight; everything downstream of it is not.

In the aftermarket, the part number is public and the packaging is copyable. What a counterfeiter cannot cheaply reproduce is a label that is physically hard to copy, carrying a serial issued only once — because every duplicate of that serial risks exposing itself in the scan log.
